Transfers well, but the case needs a LOT of work (updated), December 25, 2014

Does this get the job done? Yes- if you’re looking for something that will hook up to your tablet and computer, then this will do just that. However at the same time this is also extremely flawed in how it was designed.

First, the positives. I immediately set to downloading about a good 6-10 gigabytes of movies and music. This all transferred very quickly to the unit, which impressed me. There’s nothing worse than having something take a while to transfer because the storage isn’t of the greatest quality. As far as that goes, I didn’t have a problem.

What I did have an issue with was the packaging. The toggle between the two plugs didn’t really work all that well. Initially it didn’t seem to lock in and the regular computer USB tried to slide back into the unit when I tried to plug it in. I tried to see if maybe it was because I didn’t push it down well enough. I gently tried to slide it all the way out and initially this seemed to do the trick and I transferred files to the unit. However when I tried to slide it over to the micro USB port, it was stuck. My sister initially got it to slide back and I tried to replicate what she did, only for it to get stuck again. She tried to do the same thing again… and the little blue slider popped right off. I got it to fit back in, but it looks like this will be an ongoing problem with the unit.

I was also irritated that the flash drive didn’t take into account that some tablet users will have protective cases on their tablets. I have an Otterbox case on my tablet because it’s one of the best ways to protect my tablet from breaking when I drop it. (I had a different case on another tablet and learned this the hard way.) The case for this is slightly bulky but did not have any issue with the charging cord, so I was disappointed when this flash drive didn’t easily fit into the tablet. Given that most users will have some sort of case on their tablet, I wish that this was taken into a bit more consideration. Taking off the Otterbox case can be a bit of an ordeal so I don’t know that I’d really want to remove this each time I want to watch a specific film or whatever else I’d put on the drive, but I admit that this would be less time consuming than trying to download each film on my tablet.

I could deal with the flash drive not fitting, but the thing that would be a deal breaker for me (if I had purchased this) would be how easily this broke apart when I tried to toggle between the two USBs. This is somewhat of a cheaper option than some of the other stuff out there (which includes microSD cards) but the fairly cheap quality of the unit makes me think that this wouldn’t really stand up to regular use. There has got to be something more durable out there. This is a good idea but hold out for something a little better made case-wise.

I ended up not using mine after it broke since I didn’t want to take the risk of trusting documents to a flash drive I might not be able to access. However a friend of mine ended up buying one of these recently and it looks like there were some improvements to the case. There’s still a little struggle with the case, but it doesn’t lock up and break like mine did. I’m unsure as to whether or not to raise the ratings any on this without first seeing how his unit works in the long run.

I love the capless design, but the blue slider mechanism is very difficult to use, December 24, 2014

    32GB 120MB/s read 55MB/s write

    Design and build
Comes with a thumb slider which allows you to switch from USB 3.0 to micro-USB. The slider is somewhat flimsy and difficult to move.

Considering it was designed for Android functionality, its read and write capabilities work well for almost any storage request I.E. Pictures, movies and or files

I love the cap-less design, the blue slider mechanism is very difficult to use. It actually came off while switching from USB to micro-USB. Otherwise the unit is very convenient and plenty fast for most applications. Also it has ample storage space.

    micro-USB connector and Android functionality
    Good read performance
Can also be used with Mac and PC

Slider has the potential of breaking and difficult to move

I would give it a 4 stars if it was not for the slider design. That being said, I give it a 3 of 4 stars.

Easily transfer photos and video files from your phone to computer, December 20, 2014

Occasionally, you find a product that solves a problem or works so elegantly that you can’t help grin and nod your head in silent approval. I have a drawerful of jump drives but have to admit that I can’t remember the last time I used any of them to transfer files or store anything. Then came the realization that my phone was beginning to carry an increasing amount of information. Like many people, my phone is my primary camera. But if I wanted to transfer any of those photos, the only easy solution was to email them to myself, download the attachment and then open them; a multistep and seemingly wasteful process. I wasn’t aware this solution existed; a jump drive that had both micro and regular USB options, allowing you to directly load files from your phone and then transfer or access them directly to your PC or Mac. To test it, I simply dragged a movie I’d downloaded from my desktop to the drive icon. Being a 3.0 drive, the entire 1 gig movie transferred in less than half a minute! I disconnected it, plugged it into my Galaxy Note phone, found the file and played it directly from the drive. It opened and played flawlessly. What an elegant and simple solution! Now, if I’m on the go and don’t want to lug my computer along, I have this option to very rapidly transfer any files I need to view directly from the drive or upload into my phone. The drive is not the smallest around and it’s made out of light plastic, so I wouldn’t want to back over it with my car or accidentally step on it. But at under 30 dollars and with a 32 gig capacity and extremely fast transfer speed, it’s a tool I know I’ll be using regularly. Highly recommended for anyone with an android phone! Works with a Mac or a PC.
